Add-on Workshop | Social Media Legal Issues
This 2.5 hour workshop is an optional $75 add-on that you can purchase along with your attendee ticket. Julie Tappendorf, author of the book “Social Media & Local Governments: Navigating the New Public Square,” will lead a workshop on the various legal issues that come up with government use of social media. The workshop will cover First Amendment protections, impact of copyright laws, compliance with public record laws, and employee use of social media. Attendees will be presented with examples of “employees behaving badly” and asked to respond whether discipline for the employee’s social media activities is justified. Attendees are encouraged to bring their current social media comment/posting policies for a small group work session to identify potential problem areas. Finally, Julie will take questions on all of the thorny legal issues faced by governments (and attendees) when engaging on social media.
